Dancing Warriors

I first photographed praying mantises in 1997, but have
only started focusing on eco-art, and specifically insects
and other biodiversity themes, for the past decade.

The Dancing Warriors would be my first opportunity to
build in metal the ‘femme fatale’ of the insect world. I
have extensive experience building monumental works
using various found objects.

Mantises are originally from Africa but have spread as
the world warms due to human activity. Visitors to
Africa often focus their attention on mega fauna and
flora, such as the big 5 and not on this small insect.

A master of camouflage they often upside down to go
undetected. Flies are their favourite meal, helping natural
pest control for humans.
